 Spring Valley ACTS Barbara Fouke

Spring Valley Association of Community and Township Services, Inc. (ACTS) is a non-profit charitable corporation dedicated to preserving and improving life in Spring Valley and Spring Valley Township.  Through volunteer efforts, ACTS coordinates the annual Potato Festival, proceeds from which benefit the community in many ways, such as supporting our library and sponsoring various youth-oriented activities, including a scholarship for local students who demonstrate a spirit of civic-mindedness.  ACTS maintains Bledsoe and Founders’ Parks and is restoring the historic George Barrett Concrete House.  We welcome new members, volunteers and any suggestions!  To contact ACTS:

Community Service Scholarship – Please see the information below to learn how graduating seniors may apply for this scholarship.

Progress Report

·         Barrett House Restoration – Work to replace moldings and doors in the first floor rooms of the oldest part of the house is in progress.  The work never ends and volunteers are always welcome. If you would like to be informed of future workdays, call George McGowan, 862-4461.

·         Museum – Additional storage racks and archival preservation materials were purchased.

·         Bledsoe and Founders’ Parks – In April, members of the Board toured these parks with representatives of the Greene County Department of Development, discussing improvements that might be made with grants obtained by the Development Department.  In April and May, we spruced up and mulched the planting beds in Founders’ Park.

·         Events – A good crowd searched for goody-filled eggs and had photos taken with the Easter Bunny at the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Walton Park, despite a cold April wind.  Thanks to all the 4-H volunteers who made this event a success!

Thanks to everyone who came to our annual community Easter Egg Hunt held in Walton Park on April 3, 2010. We had a great turn out this year even though the weather was questionable. Also special thanks go to the Spring Valley ACTS for sponsoring this event and the Spring Valley Country Kids 4-H Club for their organization and execution of this event. Everyone had a great time and hope to see all of you next year.                                                                                                                            Amanda Zehring

Looking for ideas and feedback regarding the Potato Festival and Bledsoe Park

 I have two separate items that need community response;

First, I have heard on a number of occasions that there may be interest in having the Adult Lip Sync at our Friday Night Potato Festival. So the question is would you be interested in participating? If so we need to know by June 24th, in order to include it in the planning.

Second, we are looking at ways to get a grant to make improvements at Bledsoe Park. One of the ways is to have a schedule of activities in the park that would promote the arts and entertainment. This would mean that we would book activities in the park throughout the year that would educate and entertain. What I need to know here is do you have suggestions on what we would like to have? Would you like to have local band(s) come in and show their talents? A community play? An artist to come in and demonstrate painting, sculpture or drawing?

Contact me by e-mail jon_keck@yahoo.com with your thoughts on either of the programs, but soon, Thanks.                                                                                                         Jon Keck

Spring Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Judy Madden

The next Spring Valley Area Chamber of Commerce quarterly business dinner meeting will be August 11th (note this is one week later than normally scheduled) at the George Barrett Cement House located at 4 E. Main St. in Spring Valley.  Dinner will be at 6:00pm and our program will start at 6:45pm.  This will be a carry-in dinner and the Chamber will provide the meat, drinks, and table service.  Just bring something to share and put in a reservation by calling Judy Madden at 862-4110 or Pat Zehring at 862-6621.

Our program is going to be our Sixth Mini Antique Road Show.  We are asking that you bring one item per person for evaluation and remember these are going to be suggested values.  This program is always a lot of fun.

Mark your calendar for the up-coming Spring Valley Potato Festival.  It is October 3rd and 4th and if anyone would like to help, please call Reed Madden at 862-4110.

Our next business meeting will be November 3rd   with our program to be announced later.

SPRING VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETYBarbara Fouke

Meetings –
The Society meets on the third Monday of each month at 7 P.M. in the George Barrett Concrete House.  Everyone is welcome.

Town Hall Facelift  – The façade of Spring Valley’s 1888 crown jewel looks much better, but work is not finished yet.  We plan to resume work in July.  Remaining painting work includes:  entries to the Post Office; some window trim; the staircase to the 2nd floor; second coats of paint in a few areas and, most exciting, stripping and painting the fabulous Eastlake style doors to the Council chamber.  The molding and siding under one of the Post Office windows needs repair.  So, there is plenty of work to keep a number of volunteers busy.  Everyone who volunteered in the fall can expect a call!  If you would like to join the crew, please call Barb Fouke, 862-8665, or Jake Rider, 864-4744.

Walking Tour – These excerpts from "A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Spring Valley", first published several years ago by the Historical Society, describe buildings 18 through 20 on the tour.  We invite you to take a stroll through the village, look at the houses we describe, and enjoy our rich architectural heritage.

21.  201 East Main, once the Protestant Methodist Church, 1859

This frame, 1-story, side-gabled building was altered in 1922 to a Craftsman Bungalow style dwelling.  It has a shed dormer, a full façade porch, and simple brackets.

22.  108 East Main, 1870

This frame, 2-story home has an irregular plan and a hipped roof.  Its setbacks and elongated windows exhibit Italianate influences, although the truncated eaves and porch addition compromise the style.

23.  202 East Main, 1890

This frame, 2-story, gable-fronted home features shaped window surrounds.  The gabled entry porch is a replacement, and the additions to the side and rear are modern.

Pastor:  Damon Martin      Church Newsletter Editor: Dianna Myers

Greetings and glad tidings to you in the name of Jesus!  It is that time of year when the United Methodists make changes in the pastors appointed to churches.  Our church is one of them; we are getting a new pastor, and that means we are saying farewell to Pastor Kay who has been with us four years now.  Pastor Kay will be preaching in our pulpit until June 20th and then Pastor Damon Martin will begin preaching in our pulpit on June 27th.  JUNE is filled with other activities, too, and we invite you to share in them.

11th, 7:30pm, Concert, Recital and Reception.  Shery Snell invites you to a Spring Concert by the community youth choir, The SparTunes!  Also, students of the Snell Music Studio will present their recital.  A reception will follow.  Location: SV UM Church!

15-18th, Vacation Bible School.  Carla Smith is director again and invites all you young ones to enjoy the "Galactic Blast" at the church building; mornings, Tuesday through Friday that week.

17th, Fellowship Dinner.  We gather for a relaxed evening of home cooking and Christian fellowship as we wish Pastor Kay well and send her prayerfully forward on her journey.  Sisters of Faith and SPPR Committee are hosting this event at the church.

19th, Men's Fellowship.  All men are welcome to share in this monthly breakfast meeting, 8am at the church.  See you in the lower level!

20th, VBS Sunday.  All the young ones who attended Vacation Bible School are invited to attend the morning worship service at 10:30 with all their family and enjoy a brief review of some the fun they had last week.  (It's Father's Day, too!)

27th, Welcome, Pastor Damon.  This will be Pastor Damon's first Sunday to preach in the SV pulpit and we will hold a reception immediately following the morning worship hour so that we might greet Damon, his wife Sara, and their son Colman.

PREVIEW OF JULY EVENTS:

4th, Guest Preacher.  Ken Huffman will deliver a patriotic/historic message for us based on Jeremiah.  Pastor Damon will help lead the worship hour.

9-10th, SV Community Wide Garage Sale.  We will participate again this year, and The Sisters in Faith will offer baked goods for sale.  Start bringing clean items to the church hall on June 28th.  We will accept clothing, but only new items.  Sue Pike will coordinate this event so call her with questions, but not this week because she is in Michigan holding a brand new granddaughter.

Students 4 years old to finishing the 5th grade. Join us for a Galactic Blast Vacation Bible School, June 15, 16, 17, and 18 at Spring Valley United Methodist Church.  Come hear stories from the Bible, do crafts, learn music, and of course, snacks. Plan to join us from 9:30am to 12:00 noon that Tuesday through Friday for a great time.

1489 Spring Valley-Paintersville Rd., Spring Valley, Ohio 45370

Center Hours: 9am to 4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday, and 6pm to 9pm Friday

As director of the Senior Center since April 19, I have been getting to know a lot of the people coming for meals and activities.  It’s a great place to visit, play cards, quilt, exercise, or do ceramic and needlecrafts.  I encourage more seniors to come check us out!  Remember, the cafeteria is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 11:30 to 1, whatever your age!

For those of you who don’t know me, I grew up on a farm in Sugarcreek Twp., married Joel Miller in 1976 and have lived in Spring Valley ever since.  I have two children, Erin Switala, of Waterford, MI and Jason Miller, in Lebanon, OH.  I taught Home Economics at Xenia and for Greene County Career Center at Yellow Springs.  I have worked as a seamstress for Fred Miller, making band uniforms, and Sailors’ Tailor, making boat covers and beanbag chairs.  I am also Village clerk at Spring Valley for the last 2 years as well as 6 years prior to Cathy DeWine.   I’m excited about this opportunity to work with seniors in my community!  By the way, you only have to be 50 to join!

Two new board members were elected at the annual membership meeting: Sharon Neff and Linda Blanton.  Gayle Miller was also re-elected to her position.  Other board members include, Dick Nettles, Joy Muterspaw, Louise Holton, and Harold McCoy.  Also, a big thank-you to outgoing members Everett Hughes and Judy York, who served well!  Also, cheers to Rosemary Smith for 10 years as director and best wishes in your retirement      Sharon Neff was honored for her volunteer work at Spring Valley Senior Center with a leadership award at the Greene County Council on Aging Celebration.  Sharon works tirelessly at the Center to promote activities and special events.  She started and prepares a bi-monthly newsletter, enjoys designing and constructing quilts, and has taught several classes.  Sharon was born and raised in Xenia, where she currently lives.  She had attended elementary school in Spring Valley for a couple of years and had family around the area.  She was drawn to the center by the quilting but said it felt like coming back home.

Spring Valley Senior Center is planning several activities in the coming weeks.  Monday mornings, join us for ceramics, Tuesday and Thursday exercises at 11, crafts and quilting about any day, cards and dominoes in the afternoons and jigsaw puzzles anytime!  Our quilt room is back up and running!  We are already working on some quilts that have been contracted –come check out what we’re doing and help with some projects for Potato Festival.  The monthly euchre party is the 2nd Friday at 6 pm and birthday carry-in dinner and cards the 4th Friday at 6 pm.  Check our calendar for special classes!

We will be closed July 3rd & 5th for Independence Day.

Thank you to everyone who so promptly responded to our annual letter asking for donations.  We genuinely appreciate the community’s support.  We truly are a community library.

The Library was recently a beneficiary of Key Bank’s annual “Neighbors Make a Difference Day”.  An employee of the Bellbrook Branch, Pam Johnson, gave the Library a much needed “spring cleaning”.  We surely appreciate her cheerful hard work.

Summer Story Time will be held on Tuesdays beginning June 29th and ending July 20th.  We are planning two sessions each day—the younger children at 11:00am and the older group at 12:20pm (family groups can be kept together, if desired). Please call or stop by the Library to register. We always have a good turnout and would like to know how many to expect. We invite children from preschool age to young teens to participate. Between the two sessions each Tuesday, with the help and hospitality of the SV UMC next door, we will be providing a free lunch to our young readers.

Community Calendars

The Library is again selling the Spring Valley Community Calendars. This was at one time a school project, so the calendars follow the traditional school year (will run from September 2010 through August 2011).  The calendars show the meeting dates for the Village and Township councils and for all our local organizations, as well as the birthdays and anniversaries of your friends and neighbors. They also have display ads for many of our local businesses.  The calendars are just $6.00 each and that includes up to 4 listings. (Additional listings are just $.50 each.)  We will be calling if you have purchased a calendar in the past.  If you have not bought before, give us a call at the Library to place your order now.

The Library lost an avid reader and dear friend May 2nd with the passing of Bill Jackson. He will be greatly missed.

Citizen of the Year

Now is the time to think about who in our community has contributed time and energy to activities and the betterment of Spring Valley Village or Spring Valley Township.  This might be an adult or a teenager, as we have two categories.  Once you know of someone you would like to nominate for this honor, begin getting your thoughts together to write a letter to the Committee telling why this person or persons should be Citizen of the Year.  The letter may be mailed to PO Box 292, Spring Valley OH 45370.  The cutoff for nominations will be August 31st, but begin thinking now who ought to be nominated.                                                                                                                                                                                    Carol Harner
