SPRING VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Meetings – The Society meets on the third Monday of each month at 7pm in the George Barrett Concrete House.  Everyone is welcome.

How the Spring Valley Potato Festival got startedPeggy Leadingham

These quotes and information are from the minutes of the meetings of the Concerned Citizens Social Action Group, and the Spring Valley ACTS.

“On Thursday evening, September 22, 1977, a group of citizens met at Spring Valley Town Hall for the purpose of forming an organized group to promote and develop ideas of the community for the community.”

After some procedural discussion, the meeting was turned over to Mr. Harry Watson of Community Action Committee of Greene County Outreach Program. This agency helped find funding for organizations with specific goals for “community betterment.” It was Mr. Watson who said there should be a definite membership list to qualify status and give force to the group.  Those present decided to name their organization Concerned Citizens Social Action Group.

At the end of the meeting, “Mrs. Riley expressed the desire to have community get acquainted activities and Mr. Watson stated there would be some money available in October for such a festival.”

One week later, on September 29, 1977, a group consisting of Mr. Mather, Mrs. Riley, Mr. Lundy, Mayor Horner and many others, came together for a second meeting. At that meeting, discussion of an Octoberfest resulted in the decision to set up a festival to coincide with Halloween. Festival committee was set up with Pat Johnson, Pam Young, Nancy Miller, Betty Young, and Solomon Brokeshoulder.

On November 10, 1977, the results of the festival were discussed. “Community Halloween party sponsored by the group was reviewed, the success of which seems to call for bigger and better plans for subsequent festivals. Net profit to the organization as a result of the event amounted to $130.09. In light of efforts put forth by Jr. Citizens Group, it was moved by Jack Horner that proceeds from donations at the refreshment table in the amount of $33.19 be contributed to that group. Motion was seconded by Carol Harner and carried.”

By October 1978, the Concerned Citizens group changed their name to Spring Valley ACTS and moved the festival to the first weekend in October, renaming it the Spring Valley Potato Festival. Their motto was “Our future is our past,” and their goal was historical preservation of the village. To start this, the Miami University architecture department was commissioned to create a series of drawing of buildings and homes on Main Street. Five citizens loaned the money for this project, and it was hoped that the proceeds from the festival could be used to repay them.

As to “Why the potato?” Mrs. Cleo Riley was asked this question by a Dayton Daily News reporter (Sept. 1978), and she replied, “We believe we represent grassroots America, and the potato is the mainstay of the American meal.”

And that, as Paul Harvey would say, is the rest of the story.

Spring Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Judy Madden

The Spring Valley Area Chamber of Commerce quarterly business dinner meeting will be November 2nd at the Spring Valley Senior Center on Spring Valley-Paintersville Rd.  Dinner will be at 6:00pm and our business meeting starts at 6:45pm. Speaker to be announced later.  For reservations please call Pat Zehring at 862-6621 or Judy Madden at 862-4110.  See you at the Potato Festival!

SPRING VALLEY PARK DISTRICTTracey Wright

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! The Spring Valley Park District is in desperate need of volunteers for next year’s softball program. Rick McPherson has done a wonderful job all these years and is now stepping down. We need people to help organize this league.  Please contact Tracey Wright at 376-2598.

Spring Valley Village—Eric Snell

 Website

We’ve added a new website www.springvalleyohcouncil.com .  It currently has Zoning Regulations, meeting minutes, and forms you may need.  We will continue to add to this website so that information is easily available to everyone.

Council Members needed in 2012

We are going to need to fill two Village Council seats in January 2012.  If you are interested please contact the Village Office (937.862.4485) or talk to any Council member (Eric Snell, Leslie Daughtery, Gloria Graziano, Bob Urschel, Doug Walters, Reva Salyer), Clerk (Janet Miller), or Mayor (Stephanie McKee).

Planning Committee

The Planning committee still needs two village residents to participate.

Main St. Project

The grant application to acquire money to replace Main Street has been submitted and we are waiting to find out if we will receive the grant of over $700,000.  Thank you to everyone who completed the income surveys.  The surveys helped us get $150,000 over two years for the Main Street project.  This project will only proceed if we receive the main grant.  Without that we will not be able to complete the $901,000 project.

Town Hall

The village is starting a fund to receive donations to update the Town Hall so that the second and third floors can be used by residents.  If you are interested in donating, please see Doug Walters.

Finance

The finance committee is meeting at 6:30 on Sept.12.  The committee is reviewing the budgets for the Water department and the Village and making recommendations to the whole council.  The village is working to determine how best to meet the fiscal issues over the next few years in order to remain financially sound.  Public participation is welcome and desired.

Open Mon. Tues. Thurs. & Fri. 9am – 4pm  Lunch served 11:30am – 1pm

There's always something going at the center! We continue to have Monday morning ceramics painting at 9:15, Tuesday and Thursday morning line dancing at 10 and a small crafting circle, Friday morning craft-of-the-week at 9:15 and Swedish weaving at 12:30. There are seniors paying Euchre and canasta, or other card games and dominoes every afternoon. We've had some good interest in quilt classes, with several making beautiful Dresden plate blocks and Quick Trip table runners. Ann Martin has another class scheduled for October on the Flying Geese pattern. There are no quilt classes in September but there's always sewing going on in the quilt room and preparations for items to sell for Potato festival. For September we have an oil painting class with Floyd Hood on Sept 13 from 5 to 8 pm. Judy York's group of painters that has met at Rosie Bogan's will begin meeting at the center Monday nights, starting Sept. 19 from 6-9 pm. This art class will be opened up to others 50+ if you are interested in trying some different mediums -watercolor, pastels, gourd painting, etc. This is a loosely structured class without a single teacher so they are open to your ideas. Call the center or talk to Judy if you are interested. Several will be attending LaComedia for 'Church Basement Ladies- Second Helping' on October 5. At this time, there are still tickets available- check with Louise Holton or the center. We are offering several daytrips for those who want to get out and go somewhere, we have several opportunities coming up -just don't wait till the last minute to sign up!! September 27 is a Mystery Trip; October 11 is a shopping trip to Brown County, IN, and a Mystery overnight on Oct 17-18. Details are available at the center! Greene County Health District has a flu clinic scheduled here for Oct 10 from 1:30 to 3:30 if that is a convenient way for you to get your shot. Susan from GCCOA comes once a month for anyone with questions on retirement, health insurance and Medicare issues – you don't have to be a regular to come for these. We usually have someone here to check blood pressure on the second Monday before lunch and we continue to have Bingo the second Monday at 1 pm, following the pork chop day lunch. Join in a progressive Euchre party on the 2nd Friday of the month at 6 pm and a carry-in dinner to celebrate that month's birthdays the 4th Friday at 6 pm. New people are welcome!! October 28 will be our annual Halloween party and carry-in dinner. Come in costume and we'll have some games and fun!! We will also have a bake auction connected with this night so we need donations of home-made baked goods as well as bidders that would love to take home some of the best baking in the area! October is also one of our big fundraiser's- the Spring Valley Potato Festival on Oct 1 & 2! We will have a booth with crafts, ceramics, and quilted items made at the center, as well as tickets for a quilt raffle. The Friendship Star quilt is made from authentic feed sacks that had been donated by Marjorie Haines, the pinwheel blocks put together by Linda Blanton, and quilted by Kay Septant. Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5 and are already available at the senior center. The drawing will be held Sunday afternoon, Oct 2. We will also have potato farmer soft-sculpture dolls for the clearance price of $5. We would be glad for your support or just stop by and say hello! Anyone interesting in helping at the festival, please sign up at the center or call 862-4475. If you've thought about getting involved, this is a great time to meet other seniors and form connections. There are several opportunities for volunteering at the center if you just need to get out of the house once a week and want to feel needed! I'd also like to start some special days and activities to invite new groups – maybe a Spring Valley area meet-your-neighbor event, a Wright Cycle lunch-group day – let me know what you would be interested in and if you have a group that would like to come for a once-a-week or -month lunch get-together!

Spring Valley Senior Center opens up for lunch to the public from 11:30 to 1 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We put out a monthly menu that you can pick up and send bi-monthly newsletters to our members. *It only costs $15 per year to join.* Entrée’s generally cost $3, and sides, salads, and drinks $1, pie $1.75 (blackberry $2.25).
