SV FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GRANT
 Phyllis Keferl, Squad Captain, SVTFD

Senator Mike Dewine made an official visit to the fire department on August 22 to congratulate and acknowledge the awarding of a $152,179.00 federal grant to the department. The funds came about because of the FIRE (Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement) bill (S.1941) that Dewine authored and passed in 2000. These funds are part of more than $150 million in grants that will be distributed to fund firefighter training and enhance emergency medical service delivery. More than 19,500 fire departments applied for grants this year and FEMA expects to award 5,500 grants. The grant applications are processed by the U.S. Fire Administration and reviewed by 300 fire service representatives across the United States. Spring Valley is the only department in Greene County to have been awarded a grant and has received the fourth largest award in Ohio of the 25 department given monies. Training Captain Mike Bogan wrote the grant application but was unable to attend the ceremony since he was attending the National Fire Academy in Washington D.C. The members of the fire department and all of the citizens of the township owe Mike a big thanks for promoting firefighting safety, updating equipment and saving the community a lot of money. The grant will be used to purchase RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) equipment, high pressure SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) compliant to NFPA 1981 standards (2002 edition), SCBA cylinders, face pieces, mask bag and neck straps for individual use, equipment for annual face piece fit testing, integrated communications into face pieces for officers and a cylinder recharging station compliant to current NFPA standards.
